Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences

The stricto sensu Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PPGCF) at UEL aims to train professionals in the area of Pharmaceutical Sciences with the highest knowledge standards. Graduates of the program may follow an academic career, carrying out research and developing integrated activities of teaching, research, and outreach in the subject area of Drugs, Medicines, Cosmetics, and Biotechnological Products. The faculty consists of 14 full members and 5 associate members who are divided into two research themes: (1) Development and Quality of Pharmaceutical Products and Services and (2) Bioprospecting, Production, and Biological Evaluation of Molecules of Pharmaceutical Interest. The Research Themes and Projects under development in the program promote a solid training and the development of research in different fields of the Pharmaceutical Sciences, with a focus on Pharmaceutical Technologies, Pharmaceutical Assistance, and Research on the biological and technological potential of organic and inorganic substances. The faculty works collaboratively in a multi- and interdisciplinary way.

The goals of the PPGCF are:

– Train master’s students with a broad and solid knowledge in Pharmaceutical Sciences, in theory and in practice, in line with the current stage of development of the area.

– Conduct and propose scientific research projects in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences and related fields.

– Occupy leading roles in the pharmaceutical sector.

– Promote integrated teaching, research, and extension activities in higher education institutions.

– Train enterprising professionals who are qualified and able to adapt to the current demands of a society in full transformation.

– Encourage professionals working at colleges and universities to seek higher qualification at a master’s degree level and later PhD level.

– Contribute with smart and sustainable solutions to global challenges involving sustainability and the use of technologies at a local, regional, and national level.

– Contribute to the improvement of basic education through the continued training of teachers and professionals.

– Train professionals who can combine science with technological or practical application.

– Prepare professionals to work ethically in research, publication, and management of public or private sector funding.

– Train professionals who can respond to the challenges by a society in constant transformations and demands.

– Encourage, expand, and strengthen internationalization, aiming to reach higher levels in the quality of research and in the training of the students of the PPGCF.

– Train professionals in the field of Pharmacy who are able to work in various research themes and develop and apply multi- and interdisciplinary concepts in research projects.

– Train professionals who can work in research, teaching, application, and development of technology, entrepreneurship, and pharmaceutical assistance.

– Train professionals who can prepare and develop innovative scientific projects and promote the nucleation of new research groups.

– Create interdependence between Graduate Studies and other educational levels.

– Provide assistance to social projects in the city of Londrina and the surrounding region, complementing the socio/cultural training of graduate students.

– Facilitate integration, provide assistance, and develop research projects in partnership with national and international companies, with a focus on companies in the city of Londrina and the surrounding region, in order to facilitate the insertion of PPGCF graduates in the labor market. In this way, be aware of local, regional, and national technical-scientific needs.

– Produce knowledge and scientific innovation.

– Carry out research and knowledge useful to society and to the region.

Since its implementation, the PPGCF has had as its main characteristic the multi- and interdisciplinarity. These aspects can be verified by the diversified composition of its faculty and students and by the diversity of research themes under development. Students at the PPGCF come from different areas: pharmacy, chemistry, biology, biomedicine, and other related fields.

In general, all research themes in the Program were created based on the competence of those responsible. Their ability to obtain and manage financial resources for scientific research from funding agencies, to produce high-quality scientific studies and disseminate the results with national and/or international collaboration, and the ethical training of professionals who seek to meet market needs and the guidelines of the Graduate System in Brazil.

Despite the diversity of research themes under development, they are all concentrated in two main areas of research: (1) Development and Quality of Pharmaceutical Products and Services and (2) Bioprospecting, Production, and Biological Evaluation of Molecules of Pharmaceutical Interest. Research in the first focuses on areas of pharmaceutical technological development, the development of analytical methodologies, in Pharmaceutical Care and Clinical Pharmacy. Research in the second area focuses on areas of technological development of nanotechnological materials with diverse applications, the integration in many research projects that investigate the biological properties of natural products, synthetic and semi-synthetic organic compounds and inorganic materials. It is also important to highlight that, despite its multi- and interdisciplinary characteristics, the program aims to strengthen the specialized training of students, a trait that can be perceived in the range of courses offered.

Another important feature of the PPGCF is its growing interaction and integration with the social and productive sectors. Many of the professors carry out scientific research and advisory work in public and private institutions, as well as with the productive sector in Brazil. It is noteworthy that, in these lines of action, there is always the concern not to serve only as a service provider, but to get involved with projects whose results generate innovative products and services. In this way, the program has demonstrated an extremely important academic and social role of great value to the city and the surrounding region, thus aiming at the training and qualification of professionals capable of influencing the formation of processes, transfer of new knowledge to social sectors and industry and qualification of professionals to deal with socially relevant issues. The PPGCF’s academic nature and focus on research and technology aims to promote not the mere transmission of knowledge, but to create new and improved forms of knowledge. The program stimulates creative research and the development of studies under the coordination of high-quality professionals. The studies should seek to meet the demands of the pharmaceutical sector, developing new techniques and improving existing methodologies for the national development of the area. The program encourages national and international collaboration with industries, private and public educational institutions and research facilities.
