Area: Geografia
Paths of research: Dinâmica Socioespacial e Dinâmica Geoambiental
Courses: Mestrado, Doutorado e estágio Pós-Doutoral
Modalities: Acadêmico
CAPES Evaluation: 4 ( term 2017-2020)
Objectivies
The program aims to train masters and doctors with a solid theoretical and methodological basis for analyzing spatial and environmental processes, enabling them to act critically in teaching, research and professional practices related to Geography and related areas. The program strives for academic excellence and social impact, preparing graduates for contemporary challenges in fields such as education (formal and non-formal), urban and regional planning, territorial and environmental management, public policies, consultancy and geotechnologies.
Prospective students
The program is a regional reference for its interdisciplinary tradition, attracting professionals with a background in Geography or related areas (such as Geology, Biological and Social Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Architecture, Agronomy, Social Work, History and others), interested in developing multi- and interdisciplinary research on socio-spatial and environmental dynamics. The program seeks candidates with an interest in applied research – such as teaching, territorial planning, environmental management, public policies and geotechnologies – who are open to interdisciplinary dialogue, integrating different areas of knowledge into innovative approaches to Geography, and who are willing to work collaboratively in diverse teams, contributing to critical analyses of the complex relationships between society, territory and the environment.
Becoming a student
Up to 20 places are offered annually for the Master’s degree, and up to 10 places for the Doctorate. Exceptionally, a supplementary call for applications may be issued in the middle of the year, provided that the program has financial resources available and there is a demand for candidates with the right profile for the lines of research. Selection takes place through four types of vacancies:
Open competition;
Reserved places for self-declared black people;
Supplementary places for self-declared indigenous people;
Supplementary places for people with disabilities.
Scholarships
The PPGEO has scholarships and research funding from funding agencies such as CAPES , CNPq and Fundação Araucária.
Students from other Programs
Special students can take up to 50% of the program’s credits, upon approval of an application accompanied by the documentation required in the specific notice. Students enrolled under these conditions and wishing to become regular students will have to undergo a selection process and comply with all the requirements to which regular students are subject, and the academic period completed as a special student will not be counted towards the maximum time for completion of the Program.
Academic Mobility
Students enrolled in Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Programs at other institutions, duly recognized by CAPES, may take courses as a special student, offered at any time during the academic period by UEL Programs, provided they are authorized by the teacher responsible for the course and the Program Coordinator and comply with the following procedures:
l. completion of the application form provided by PROPPG;
ll. presentation of proof of enrollment from the institution of origin;
III. submission of a letter from the advisor recommending the course.
Brief introduction
The Postgraduate Program in Geography at the State University of Londrina (PPGEO/UEL) investigates the complex relationships between society and nature through its area of concentration “Socio-environmental Dynamics and Spatial Organization”. It carries out research into socio-spatial processes (urban and rural transformations and territorial planning) and geo-environmental dynamics (risk management and natural resources), using geotechnologies as tools for territorial analysis. With a solid background in Geography and openness to dialogue with other areas of knowledge, the program prepares professionals to work in teaching, research and territorial management, combining academic rigor with social impact.
Masters
The duration of the Master’s program is 24 months or 4 (four) semesters.
During the course, the Master’s student must complete 1,050 (one thousand and fifty) hours corresponding to 70 (seventy) credits, distributed as follows:
a) 10 (ten) credits in compulsory subjects;
b) A minimum of 16 (sixteen) credits in elective courses;
c) 44 (forty-four) credits in the Master’s Dissertation.
Doctorate
The duration of the PhD course is 48 months or 8 (eight) semesters. Doctoral students must complete 2,610 (two thousand, six hundred and ten) hours corresponding to 174 (one hundred and seventy-four) credits, distributed as follows:
a) 10 (ten) credits in compulsory subjects;
b) A minimum of 24 (twenty-four) credits in optional subjects;
c) 140 (one hundred and forty) credits in the Thesis.
Sandwich Doctorate Abroad (PDSE/CAPES)
The UEL Graduate Program in Geography (PPGEO) encourages the international mobility of its doctoral students through the CAPES Sandwich Doctorate Abroad Program (PDSE). This program allows
Period: 4 to 9 months in foreign institutions of excellence;
Objective: Research improvement, access to new methodologies and integration into international academic networks;
Funding: CAPES/PDSE grant (depending on budget availability and approval of the project in an internal call for proposals launched by the program).
Post-Doctorate
The Post-Doctoral Internship (or Post-Doctorate) comprises research and/or technological innovation activities carried out by doctors, under the supervision of a permanent UEL professor or senior researcher linked to PPGEO/UEL or to research groups registered with CNPq. Its main objectives are: to consolidate, update and broaden the scientific and technological knowledge of the post-doctoral student, possibly redirecting their lines of research; to strengthen the institution’s research groups with high-level work; and to contribute to the renewal of postgraduate programs through the training of qualified human resources.
