{"id":3780,"date":"2025-05-21T10:44:59","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T13:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pos.uel.br\/geografia\/?page_id=3780"},"modified":"2025-05-21T10:55:48","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T13:55:48","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pos.uel.br\/geografia\/en\/history\/","title":{"rendered":"History"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Graduate Program in Geography at the State University of Londrina (PPGEO\/UEL)<\/strong> was established in 2001 as a Master\u2019s program, initially named <em>\u201cGeography, Environment, and Development.\u201d<\/em> Its theoretical and methodological proposal integrated teaching, research, and outreach, with a focus on environmental issues and regional development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Phase (2001\u20132007): Initial Structuring<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> The program was organized into four research lines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Watershed Dynamics and Management<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technological Modernization and Territorial Organization in Paran\u00e1<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Land Use and Environmental Analysis<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Population and Development<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This structure reflected the academic and social demands of the time, with an emphasis on regional studies of Northern Paran\u00e1\u2014a region historically researched by geographers such as Pierre Monbeig, Lysia Bernardes, among others, who analyzed the transformations of Paran\u00e1\u2019s territory from the pioneer fronts to the consolidation of the urban network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2008 Restructuring: Consolidation of the Current Research Lines<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>In 2008, the program underwent its first major restructuring (Resolution CEPE-UEL 127\/2007), being renamed <em>\u201cMaster\u2019s in Geography\u201d<\/em> and reorganized into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Area of Concentration:<\/strong> <em>Socio-environmental Spatial Dynamics<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research Lines:<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Geoenvironmental Dynamics<\/em> (natural processes, water resource management, and risk assessment)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Socio-spatial Dynamics<\/em> (urban and rural transformations, and territorial planning)<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This change allowed greater integration among research efforts and reinforced the program\u2019s geographic character, maintaining its connection to local issues such as agricultural modernization and the impacts of recent territorial occupation in Paran\u00e1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expansion to the Doctorate (2012) and Internationalization<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> In 2012, PPGEO took a qualitative leap with the implementation of its Doctoral program, expanding its scope to research at both national and international levels. During this period:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Internationalization was strengthened through academic exchanges (Argentina, Portugal, Spain, and Canada)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of faculty and course offerings increased, incorporating topics such as Industrial Geography, Pedology, and Teacher Education<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The program became a reference not only at the regional level but also nationally, attracting students from various states<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Postdoctoral Stage and New Restructuring (2016\u20132018)<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Starting in 2016, the program began offering postdoctoral fellowships (PNPD\/CAPES), encouraging advanced research and the retention of researchers. In 2017\u20132018, a new restructuring (Resolution No. 30\/2017) updated the curriculum structure, maintaining:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Area of Concentration:<\/strong> <em>Socio-environmental Dynamics and Spatial Organization<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research Lines:<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Socio-spatial Dynamics<\/em> (now including studies on inequalities, public policies, and geography education)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Geoenvironmental Dynamics<\/em> (with emphasis on climate change, risk management, and sustainability)<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recent Challenges and Consolidation (2018\u20132024)<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> In recent years, PPGEO faced the retirement of founding faculty members but renewed itself with the inclusion of new researchers, maintaining a balance across its research lines.
